Local Food – Anago Chikuwa (Fish Paste with Conger Eel)

anago chikuwaFreshly Grilled “Anago Chikuwa” (Fish & Conger Eel Sausage)

Visited Miyajima Island, Hiroshima Pref. West Japan. The Seto Inland Sea is famous for Conger Eel “Anago”. Chikuwa means Chiku – Bamboo, Wa – Circle or Round. The shape of the sausage looks like bamboo and grilled like the image. We can find Chikuwa anywhere in Japan at supermarket but this Chikuwa was uniquely made by local specialty – Anago as one of the ingredients. The umami flavor and texture of the fish paste were lovely and golden brown surface smells so good. Highly recommended this Chikuwa when you visit the world heritage site Miyajima Island, Hiroshima Pref.

It’s fun to enjoy foods based on the local produce. Along the road to the famous Itsukushima Shrine in the island, there are a few fish sausage shop with various ingredients such as cheese, onion, oyster, bacon flavor etc… It reminds me the food truck of hot dog in US.
