New Year Feast

There are many ways to celebrate new year in the world …. but “Osechi-Ryori” is one of “can’t-miss food” for Japanese on New Year. Each ingredients represent good fortune, prosperity and health. Some people cook everything at home like us but many restaurants, hotels, department stores sell Osechi Ryori as well.

In December, we can find display section of Osechi Ryori Sample (made by plastic same as restaurant food sample) at the basement of department store and people book favorite set in advance. Then people pick it up there on 31st December or it’s delivered to home directly by courier service.

If you have a chance to be in Japan for the season, you may find those unique and beautiful food samples at the department store. Price range is from 10,000 yen to 100,000 yen +. It’s a Japanese tradition but these days we find chinese/western food version too to fit various customers needs. But of course, I prefer authentic home-made Osechi. 😉

I lived in Japan for a year (a long time ago) but this tradition passed me by. Thanks for posting about it — I’ll definitely investigate further and maybe prepare something myself next year!

Thanks for your comment, Andrea. Osechi-ryori is usually enjoyed at home. So probably you didn’t find it while you lived here. 🙂 Multi-tiered food box with traditional pattern is beautiful too.
